From FAME Studios to the birthplace of W.C. Handy — the essential music landmarks to visit in the Shoals area of northwest Alabama.
Top 10 Music Landmarks in Muscle Shoals
The Shoals area of northwest Alabama — Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals — is packed with music history. Here are the ten sites every music lover should visit.
1. FAME Studios
603 Avalon Avenue, Muscle Shoals Rick Hall's legendary studio where Aretha Franklin recorded "I Never Loved a Man," Wilson Pickett cut "Mustang Sally," and Etta James laid down "Tell Mama." Still a working studio — tours are available and the original Studio B is preserved exactly as it was in the 1960s.
2. Muscle Shoals Sound Studio
3614 Jackson Highway, Sheffield The Swampers' original studio, now a museum. The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Rod Stewart all recorded here. The building itself — a converted coffin showroom — is a National Historic Landmark.
3. Alabama Music Hall of Fame
617 US-72, Tuscumbia A brilliant museum celebrating the state's extraordinary musical heritage. Exhibits cover everyone from Hank Williams and Nat King Cole to Lionel Richie, the Commodores, and the Muscle Shoals musicians.
4. W.C. Handy Birthplace, Museum & Library
620 West College Street, Florence The "Father of the Blues" was born in Florence in 1873. This small log cabin museum tells his remarkable story and houses memorabilia from his career.
5. Cypress Moon Studios
Sheffield The Swampers' second (larger) studio, built in the 1970s. Now owned by Muscle Shoals music legend Jason Isbell and used as a recording and rehearsal facility.
6. Sam Phillips' Birthplace
Florence Before he founded Sun Records in Memphis and discovered Elvis Presley, Sam Phillips grew up in Florence. A historical marker commemorates his birthplace.
7. Rattlesnake Saloon
Tuscumbia A unique live music venue built into a natural rock shelter beneath a bluff. Great atmosphere and a true only-in-Alabama experience.
8. Swampers Bar & Grille
Sheffield Named after the legendary session musicians, this is a popular local spot with live music and walls covered in Muscle Shoals music memorabilia.
9. Florence Indian Mound & Museum
Florence The largest domiciliary mound in the Tennessee Valley. While not music-related, it provides fascinating context about the area's deep history.
10. Singing River Trail
Across the Shoals A scenic trail connecting all four Shoals cities. Perfect for getting a feel for the landscape that shaped the sound — the Tennessee River, cotton fields, and small-town Alabama.
