Aretha Franklin. The Rolling Stones. Wilson Pickett. Bob Dylan. Etta James. They all made the pilgrimage to a tiny town on the Tennessee River. Find out why — and visit for yourself on a Travelling Time escorted music tour.
In the 1960s, a quiet stretch of towns along the Tennessee River in northwest Alabama — Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals — became the most unlikely recording capital in the world. Rick Hall's FAME Studios (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises) pioneered a raw, soulful sound that blended rhythm & blues, country, and rock 'n' roll into something entirely new.
When Atlantic Records' Jerry Wexler brought Aretha Franklin to Muscle Shoals in 1967 to record at FAME, the result was electrifying. The session produced "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" and put Muscle Shoals on the global map. Percy Sledge had already recorded "When a Man Loves a Woman" there, and Wilson Pickett cut "Land of 1000 Dances" and "Mustang Sally" in the same studios.
In 1969, the legendary session musicians known as The Swampers — Barry Beckett, David Hood, Jimmy Johnson and Roger Hawkins — left FAME to open their own facility, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, at 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield. The Rolling Stones came to record "Brown Sugar" and "Wild Horses." Bob Dylan recorded "Slow Train Coming." Lynyrd Skynyrd immortalised the musicians in "Sweet Home Alabama" with the lyric "Now Muscle Shoals has got the Swampers."
Today, you can visit both FAME Studios and the original Muscle Shoals Sound Studio building, along with the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in Tuscumbia. These unassuming buildings in small-town Alabama are hallowed ground for music lovers — and they're a highlight of several Travelling Time escorted tours.
The Shoals area — Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals — is packed with music history, culture and natural beauty.

1028 South Court Street, Florence
One of the largest domiciliary mounds in the Tennessee Valley, dating back over 1,500 years. The museum features Native American artefacts from the region.

Downtown Sheffield
Public art celebrating the Shoals' musical heritage. Native Americans called the Tennessee River 'the singing river' for its unusual sounds — believed by many to be the spiritual source of the area's musical creativity.
