From New Orleans jazz to Memphis blues, Muscle Shoals soul and Nashville country — the ultimate guide to a music road trip through the Deep South.

The Ultimate Deep South Music Road Trip

The American Deep South is where popular music was born. Jazz in New Orleans. Blues in Mississippi and Memphis. Soul in Muscle Shoals. Country in Nashville. Rock 'n' roll woven through all of it.

A road trip through these cities isn't just a holiday — it's a pilgrimage through the places where the soundtrack of the 20th century was created.

    Stop 1: New Orleans, Louisiana

    The birthplace of jazz.

New Orleans is where it all began. In the early 1900s, the collision of African rhythms, European brass band traditions, blues, and ragtime created a new form of music that would sweep the world.

    Must-visit spots:

    • Preservation Hall — intimate traditional jazz performances in a crumbling, magical venue
    • Frenchmen Street — the locals' alternative to Bourbon Street, with superb live music clubs
    • French Quarter — wrought-iron balconies, street musicians, and the spirit of jazz around every corner
    • Tipitina's — legendary music venue in the Garden District
    • Louis Armstrong Park — dedicated to Satchmo himself

The food: Don't miss the beignets at Café Du Monde, gumbo at Dooky Chase's, and a po'boy from anywhere.

    Stop 2: The Mississippi Delta

    Where the blues was born.

The flat, fertile land of the Mississippi Delta produced an extraordinary concentration of blues talent. Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and John Lee Hooker all came from this region.

    Must-visit spots:

    • Clarksdale — the crossroads where Robert Johnson allegedly sold his soul, plus the superb Delta Blues Museum and Ground Zero Blues Club (co-owned by Morgan Freeman)
    • The Crossroads — the intersection of Highways 61 and 49
    • Dockery Farms — the cotton plantation where Charley Patton created the Delta blues style

    Stop 3: Memphis, Tennessee

Home of the blues, birthplace of rock 'n' roll.

Memphis is where the rural blues of the Delta was electrified and amplified, and where Sam Phillips at Sun Records sparked the rock 'n' roll revolution.

    Must-visit spots:

    • Beale Street — three blocks of blues clubs, bars, and live music
    • Sun Studio — "The Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll," where Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins recorded
    • Graceland — Elvis Presley's home, still one of the most-visited private residences in America
    • Stax Museum of American Soul Music — where Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s created the Memphis soul sound
    • National Civil Rights Museum — built around the Lorraine Motel where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated

    Stop 4: Muscle Shoals, Alabama

    The unlikely soul capital.

This cluster of small towns — Florence, Sheffield, Tuscumbia, and Muscle Shoals — on the Tennessee River produced some of the most important recordings in music history.

    Must-visit spots:

    • FAME Studios — where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Etta James recorded (still a working studio)
    • Muscle Shoals Sound Studio — the Swampers' legendary facility at 3614 Jackson Highway
    • Alabama Music Hall of Fame — celebrating the state's incredible musical heritage
    • W.C. Handy Museum — birthplace of the "Father of the Blues" in Florence

    Stop 5: Nashville, Tennessee

    Music City.

The journey ends in Nashville — the undisputed capital of country music and one of the great live music cities of the world.

    Must-visit spots:

    • Grand Ole Opry — the most famous stage in country music
    • Ryman Auditorium — the "Mother Church," with perfect acoustics
    • Broadway & Lower Broadway — honky-tonks from morning till late
    • Country Music Hall of Fame — three floors of country music history
    • RCA Studio B — where Elvis recorded over 200 songs
    • Bluebird Cafe — the intimate songwriter showcase where Garth Brooks was discovered
